Villain Ratings

Ah, perfect. I was just about to post my little collection of opinions on a number of RPG villains. This is sort of a spin-off from the RPG ratings thread.

Let me warn, though: this post will contain spoilers, so beware. I list the game's name before all the other information, so be sure to skip the information on the games you haven't played yet. This posts has spoilers on (in alphabetical order): Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VI - X-2, Lunar SSSC, Suikoden 2-3, Vagrant Story, Xenogears. I've listed mostly popular villains and those I've found worth mentioning. The only exception is Albedo, whose backstory/motivations aren't yet revealed to us English-speaking gamers, so he'll wait. if you think I've missed more worthy villains, please tell me.

So, what characteristics would a good villain have? Well, any villain is a character first, so personality is probably the most important aspect. And most of megalomaniacal and/or psychotic villains that create the majority fail for me in this category. A good character should also have a backstory. Another importnant, although optional, aspect is character development - it's always good to know how the villain has chosen his way, but it's even better to participate in those events. Next, a villain is mainly distinguished from the playable character cast by having a definite goal - and it's either the goal or means of its ahievement that define him as a villain. Obviously, result also matters. So, I'll be listing my outlook on those aspects, as well as giving my opinion on the villains as grades on 1-10 scale.

Chrono Cross :: Lynx/Fate

Backstory: supercomputer that has travelled back in time by accident. Deliberately tries to minimize the outside world's influence on itself and artificial archipelago it created.
Goal: Serge, the boy who has access to its source of power.
Means: Luring outsiders into archipelago; creation of chaos and commotion; emimination of CT's heroes.
Result: After getting what it wanted, it didn't use it as it should, but instead waited for the protagonist to destroy it.
Personality: Absent?
Development: Zero.
Verdict: I can't think of a human villain who would be that stupid, and we're talking about supercomputer here. Such incongruity between the goal and means of its achievement is absolutely unforgivable.

Grade: 2.0

Final Fantasy VI :: Kefka

Backstory: General of an imperial army who has undergone an unsuccessful experiment.
Goal: To become a tyrant god.
Means: Serving emperor until the time comes, and then grabbing the power that controls the world.
Result: He did become a god.
Personality: Insane... with a style.
Development: Alas.
Verdict: Kefka is a sadist who desires power to manifest his wickedness on a worldwise scale. An insane clown who escaped from asylum to the world's steering wheel, incredibly charismatic and totally evil. The best SNES villain.

Grade: 7.5

Final Fantasy VII :: Sephiroth

Backstory: Semiartificial halfmutant. The war hero. Found out his origin and went nuts. Burned down a town and was drowned by a loser. Thanks to that, got the planet's knowledge.
Goal: Absorption of the Planet's energy, merging with it, ruling over it.
Means: Does nothing while his mom organizes all the necessary things.
Result: Summons Meteor. Dies.
Personality: The 'badass' stereotype.
Development: Incredibly lame transformation from antisocial melancholic into a madman.
Verdict: The gaming world's most overrated antagonist. Cheap character who became popular because of his shallow 'coolness' and thanks to the game he was in. Cliche who went through typical "I'm not a human, thus I go nuts", have achieved nothing and have never had any perspectives. Completely one-dimensional and primitive villain.

Grade: 3.0

Final Fantasy VIII :: Seifer Almasy

Backstory: Orphan. Insolent loser.
Goal: To become a sorceress' knight. Read: a loyal dog.
Means: Becomes a loyal dog.
Result: Licks the sorceress' shoes the whole game, oblivious of everything, including his friends, ex-girlfriend and the whole world.
Personality: Snotty kid, possessed by his 'dream'.
Development: None.
Verdict: Unbelievably deficient.

Grade: 1.0

Final Fantasy VIII :: Ultimecia

Backstory: Evil sorceress of the future.
Goal: Kompress time.
Means: Searches for the girl with power to achieve the goal.
Result: Perishes.
Personality: Megalomaniacal.
Development: Oops.
Verdict: No backstory, no motivation, no dialogues, no development, nothing.

Grade: 2.0

Final Fantasy IX :: Kuja

Backstory: Artificially created machine of destruction. Puppet with a soul.
Goal: Dispose of its creator.
Means: Gains power.
Result: Kills his creator, but loses it when he finds out that he's a mortal.
Personality: Purposeful, active.
Development: Quite unsatisfying transition from "everybody dies with me" to "go on living".
Verdict: Not bad.

Grade: 6.0

Final Fantasy X :: Seymour

Backstory: Half blood. His mother gave life for the sake of fighting Sin.
Goal: Become one with Sin and rid the world from suffering via its destruction.
Means: Chaos and lame attempts at using Yuna.
Result: Nothing.
Personality: Polite, insolent, full of pathos.
Development: Not worthy of mentioning.
Verdict: Pitiful loser.

Grade: 3.5

Final Fantasy X :: Sin

Backstory: The final argument in the war of two countries.
Goal: Random destruction.
Means: Immortality through constant reincarnation.
Result: Disgraceful behavior for a whole millenium.
Personality: Not applicable.
Development: Same.
Verdict: The best villain of its type, perhaps.

Grade: 7.5

Final Fantasy X-2 :: Shuyin

Backstory: Killed with his love. Dead and very angry.
Goal: Humans suck, they should all die.
Means: Superweapon ahoy.
Result: Superweapon sank.
Personality: Lacking.
Development: Ditto.
Verdict: Annoyance.

Grade: 3.5

Final Fantasy Tactics :: Delita Hyral

Backstory: Commoner who lost his only sister.
Goal: Creation of a single powerful kingdom under his rule.
Means: Manipulates everyone he can.
Result: Ends the war and becomes a king.
Personality: Brave, prudent, shrewd; despite his composure, still capable of love.
Development: From a commoner-altruist into a ruthless mastermind of a king. Dreamless is correct, this is the best development, indeed.
Verdict: A great example of a sterling antagonist.

Grade: 9.5

Lunar Silver Star Story Complete :: Ghaleon

Backstory: One of the Four Heroes known throughout the world.
Goal: Returning the world to a centralized dominion; returning the Goddess to the world.
Means: Utilizing the lower races, destruction of potential rivals, abduction of the goddess' reincarnation.
Result: Loss at the final stage.
Personality: Ęsthete.
Development: Not really. Just one flashback to indicate that all it took was a pessimistic outlook.
Verdict: Great.

Grade: 9.0

Suikoden 2 :: Jowy Atreides

Backstory: Offspring of a noble family who preferred society of commoners. Set up by his own country, seeks revenge against it, but suddenly changes his mind.
Goal: Stopping the war with minimal losses on both sides; confining the unleashed Beast Rune.
Means: Disposal of the royal family; becoming the king.
Result: War eventually lost; Beast Rune dealed with; those dear to him saved; destiny of fighting with his friend overcome.
Personality: Calm, reserved, thoughtful; shows compassion and devotion; willing to sacrifice his life for others.
Development: His personality never changed; his outlook did.
Verdict: Best RPG antagonist.

Grade: 10.0

Suikoden 2 :: Luca Blight

Backstory: Prince. As a child, he witnessed his mother raped by ruffians from the neighbouring country as his father fled.
Goal: Mass genocide.
Means: Fueling a full-scale war, slaughtering towns and villages, awakening of the Beast Rune.
Result: The war didn't end even with his death.
Personality: Crazy sadist.
Development: Nay.
Verdict: Very powerful villain.

Grade: 8.0

Suikoden 3 :: Luc

Backstory: Artificially created host for the True Wind Rune. His innate connection with Rune allows him to see the future that the Runes have for the world.
Goal: Rid the world from this future.
Means: Utilization of all means in search for other True Runes, pushing locals into internecine conflicts, thus lowering thei might; preparations for the True Runes' destruction.
Result: Loss at the final stage.
Personality: In fact, I wanted to create a sole thread about him... But I guess it'll be just as appropiate here. What I particularly enjoy about him is that he's not the "overconfident superman"-type of villain, despite all the power he has. He hesitates. After all, he's a human, despite his attempts to deny it with his artificial genesis. He's trying to deny his "lingering attachment to the world", but it's there. He suffers from disrepancies within himself, his human nature contradicts his cold will; he even compares himself to a demon because of all the sacrifices he's willing to make to achieve his goal. He searches for understanding, but doesn't find it - neither his brother (the person he hates most ans yet the only one who he empathizes with), who's loyal to their creator, nor the protagonists wish to understand him. His opposition with the heroes is quite interesting as well - because the protagonists' righteousness is anything but right. Luc offers them to see the future; the future where humans don't exist - the future that will come unless something cardinally changes. Luc thinks and acts globally; heroes - locally. They're concerned with everyday problems - food, shelter, safety; global thinking is alien to them; they don't accept justification the means by the goal. They only care of their own bellies, of fulfilling their primitive needs, they deny the very possibility of that future in a burth of their overconfidence. "Nonsense!" they shout, putting their low interests above the whole world's destiny. They want to leave in a giant cell with invsible leashes around their necks; it's their choice. Thus, Luc's revolt against destiny fails. What also is notabe about him is his love story. Granted, it's not as developed as ones of most protagonists, but it creates a perfect conclusion to his inner contradictions - and ends his life in peace.
Development: This part is quite interesting as well. Granted, we don't see much of his development aside from his acceptance of his human nature, but we can see him years before his quest for True Rune's destruction - in Suikoden and Suikoden 2. In the first game, he's just a boy who enjoys his Rune's power, in the second - a typical teenager who shows his serious side only when faced with his brother. I'd say that's interesting enough.
Verdict: best RPG antagonist.

Grade: 10.0

Vagrant Story :: Sydney Losstarot

Backstory: Offspring of a family cursed with a Blood-Sin tattoo.
Goal: Ending the cursed bloodline.
Means: Organizing a whole cult for his means; luring the possible candidates for inheriting Blood-Sin into an isolated and deserted town full of his black magic; testing them.
Result: Successful host found, tattoo transferred, bloodline ended.
Personality: Enigmatic. He doesn't take interest in himself; rather, in his guests.
Development: He doesn't need that.
Verdict: Quite a noteworthy villain.

Grade: 8.5

Xenogears :: Krelian

Backstory: A good friend of a woman who perished for peace, woman whose belief in god was quite strong.
Goal: Create the god.
Means: Destroying all the obstacles, and using humans as the material for god's resurrection.
Result: God is born and is defeated.
Personality: Quite little. Devotion to his work owns him.
Development: Loss of faith in humanity and god after Sophis'a death.
Verdict: An intelligent mastermind who doesn't make mistakes.

Grade: 8.0

That's all for now. Took quite a time...

Fanboys across the world are sharpening their knives as we speak.

Otherwise (for the characters I know at least), good post, although rating Shuyin as 3.5 seems a tad generous to me.

Two off the top of my head... I should write some up for Ogre Battle 64 since that has a pretty good cast of villains in it but I'll need some time to think about it (and remember/look up names!).

Elder Scrolls Oblivion : : Daedric Demon Thing

Spoiler:
Backstory: Angry destructive demon from another demension.
Goal: Take back what he calls his land (the area the game is set in)
Means: Put a bunch of portals around the continent from which to spew his army, but which also allow easy access to parts of his realm.
Result: Portals closed, army crushed, defeated by the sacrafice of the king.
Personality: Big and angry?
Development: Not much.

Verdict: Pretty lame, doubly so since you never even fight him, you just watch him get owned.

Grade: 2.0

Elder Scrolls Oblivion: The Shivvering Isles : : Daedric Prince Sherogorath

(This one could be looked at two ways but I'm going to go with the more merciful way to evaluate this one)
Spoiler:
Backstory: Totally nuts bipolar prince overseeing a small realm of equally crazy citizens.
Goal: Stop the Greymarch, aka the taking over of his mind by the other half of his personality.
Means: Enlisting the help of the strongest adventurer he could find.
Result: Greymarch occurs anyway, his other personality takes over but is defeated; thanks the hero for helping him free himself of the prison that was this cycle in the island realm, and takes off for some payback to the other daedric princes that imprisioned him.
Personality: Quirky, funny, crazy, and unpredictable, yet static.
Development: Little real development, though seeing so many sides to him was good.

Verdict: Interesting, entertaining, motivated...and crazy.

Grade: 8.0

Xenosaga - Wilhelm

Backstory:
Spoiler:
Wilhelm is a part of the universe. He is the protector of the Lower Domain. He will do whatever is necessary to protect it.

Goal:
Spoiler:
To use Zarathustra to cause Eternal Recurrence to prevent the destruction of the universe, which he has succeeded to accomplish dozens or possibly hundreds of times before.

Means:
Spoiler:
Persecuting the Messiah to get the disciples away from chaos. Manipulating the group that found the Zohar. Using the Federation Government as the Executive Committee Director. Controlling Vector. Controlling Hyams and Ormus as Cardinal, and later Pope, Heinlein.

Result:
Spoiler:
Mary and Shion rejected Eternal Recurrence. Kevin channeled the power from Zarathustra through himself and Wilhelm. Wilhelm lost his body, but his consciousness still exists in the Unus Mundus. He used the final UMN Column to send the Dammerung and the Elsa to the Milky Way galaxy, so Shion can find Lost Jerusalem.

Personality: Extremely manipulative. He will use anyone, as long as it allows him to fulfill his goal. Very calm. He is also good with people and highly respected, as seen in the conversation with Helmer in Episode I.

Development: He goes from simply being the mysterious leader of the largest corporation in the universe to a mastermind that has everything planned out.

Verdict: To me, Wilhelm is one of the most interesting 'villains' in a while. He's not simply an insane, evil character like most villains are. He has a plan and he wasn't entirely wrong to do what he did.

Rating: 9

I have a better idea. Let's do it for non-RPG villains as well, because I believe some are worth the mention. 1 is worst, 5 is best

FFIV: Zemus

Backstory: Lunarian who saw humans as undesirable beings
Goal: Acquisition of the crystals and ruling over all
Means: Using Golbez and the Kingdom of Baron as a puppet to gather the crystals

Development: N/A
Verdict: Has too much time on his hands
Grade: 1.5

FFVII: Sephiroth

Backstory: A semiartificial being created by a totalitarian corporation. Found out about it, went cuckoo.
Goal: Becoming a god, reuniting with "mother", destroying the world
Means: Summoning meteor, using Jenova to do his work for him

Personality: badass
Development: Too quick
Verdict: He's really not that great a villain. The OP is absolutely right.
Grade: 3.0

FFVIII: Ultimecia

Backstory: None
Goal: Time compression
Means: Finding the right sorceress to do it. Trying to kill Rinoa in very brutal ways
Result: Time is almost compressed but she fails
Personality: A sadistic bitch
Development: N/A
Verdict: I hated her but I would have liked to know why she became like that
Grade: 2.3

FFIX: Kuja

Backstory: Created in a lab to be a temporary angel of death
Goal: Killing Garland, ruling over Terra and Gaia
Means: Gains the power to do so
Result: Kills Garland, goes crazy after finding out he'll die soon, decides to destroy the universe because he believes nobody should exist if he dies.
Personality: dramatic
Development: Good
Verdict: One of the better villains
Grade: 3.9

FFX: Seymour

Backstory: Was baished because he's a hybrid. His mom gave her life to become a fayth. Now he has a savior complex
Goal: Becoming Sin and destroying Spira, thus ending its suffering
Means: Trying to get Yuna to use him as her fayth.
Result: Ends up getting absorbed into Sin, gets sent.
Personality: Unlike most villains who know they are committing acts of evil, Seymour truly believes that what he's doing is right.
Development: Very good
Verdict: Deep character, creepy
Grade: 4.8

Mario=Bowser

Backstory: Turtle whose passtime is kidnappind Peach
Goal: Uknown, probably just to piss Mario off
Means: Kidnapping Peach, stealing stars, turning kings into animals.
Result: Plans never work
Personality: Mean, bullying
Development: N/A
Verdict: No comment
Grade: 1.3

Zelda Ocarina of Time (didn't play the others)=Ganondorf

Backstory: Gerudo born to two mothers (how is this possible)
Goal: Becoming the absolute ruler of Hyrule
Means: Obtaining the Triforce
Result: Obtained only the triforce of power, ruled Hyrule for seven years
Personality: Evil overlord
Development: Poor
Verdict: A truly hateful villain. The Sauron type. No depth but a great villain nonetheless
Grade: 4.5

Syphon Filter 2 and 3=Vincent Hadden

Backstory: US Secretary of State who sees the virus as a means to gaining power
Goal: Obtaining the Syphon Filter virus, selling it to Shi-Hao
Means: Using the Agency and Mara Aramov to steal it
Result: In 2, the Agency gets pwned, in 3, it is discovered that he was apparently behind the whole thing, is about to be arrested but is shot by Mara.
Personality: Corrupt politician
Development: None
Verdict: All politicians are snakes, but some are truly venomous
Grade: 3.6

Syphon Filter Omega Strain=Mikhas Ivankov

Goal: Selling the Syphon Filter virus to gain the funds to buy a nuke
Means: Creating an uncontrolled version of SF called the Omega Strain, sells it to several terrorist organizations.
Result: Obtains the nuke, but is thwarted by the Agency. Top lieutenants are killed by the agent you use, and he probably dies when the base explodes.
Personality: Terrorist driven by his cause
Development: None, but just look at real Chechen terrorists and you'll see.
Grade: 4.8

Xenogears=Krelian

Backstory: Led the Surface Dweller uprising started by Sophia, a woman who preached peace, love for one another, and believed firmly in God. When Sophia sacrificed herself, he lost all faith in mankind and vowed to create a god with his own hands
Goal: Ressurection of Deus
Means: Mutating human beings, absorbing them into a false god, and wreaking havoc on the world
Result: Resurrected Deus, Deus was destroyed, the Wave Existance (the true God) freed, Krelian goes to be one with God.
Personality: Cold, emotionless, devoted to his ambition
Development: Excellent
Grade: 5.0

KOTOR II: The Sith Lords:

Spoiler:
Kreia/Darth Traya

Backstory: Revan's Jedi Master, expelled from the Jedi Order for her corrupt teachings. Becomes Dark Lord of the Sith, then gets betrayed by her Sith Apprentices. Thus, betrayed by both Jedi and Sith.

Goal: To get revenge on the Force itself, since both the light side (Jedi) and the dark side (Sith) had caused her grief. To destroy the Force.

Means: Disguises her intentions through the Force to both Jedi and Sith, much as Palpatine did to make himself undetectable to the Jedi. Teaches the Exile to reconnect with the force, as well as teaching her* views on the Force heretical of both Jedi and Sith teachings. Manipulates the Exile, her friends and everyone else. Later, reembraces the dark side as merely a tool to bring about her goal.

*The Exile is canonically female.

Result: Near-extinction of both Jedi and Sith. But eventually dies at the Exile's hands. But dies with satisfaction, at least in her own mind, that the Exile proved that life can exist without the Force. Hopes such knowledge can be used in the future to attack the Force.

Personality: Manipulative as hell. Cryptic. Cynical. Condescending. Ayn Rand-ish.

Development: Outstanding.

Verdict: Extremely loathesome character, but also easily one of the most well written, developed, complex and multi-dimensional. Her philosophy and her means are both incredibly vile. She's proof that a villain doesn't have to be sympathetic to be complex, and she's about as far removed from sympathetic as it gets. I looked forward to cutting her down at the end. And isn't a villain supposed to elicit some sort of hateful response?

Grade: 9.5

Would his development in Mario RPG count? Or is it negated because he wasn't technically a villian in that game?

I wouldn't say he's a good guy, I'd say his means was simply using Mario as one of his troops to regain his castle.

3.0 for Sephiroth? Is that your honest opinion or are you factoring in the need to counter the wave of rabid Sephiroth fanboys desperate to give out 10's? Because it seems very harsh.

Quote:
Means: Does nothing while his mom organizes all the necessary things.
For starters, I believe he was controlling his mother the entire time. If Jenova was the main villain behind it all, she would've been the final boss (Ultimicea).

Anyway, I'll post a couple, although I'm a firm believer that the whole is often more (or less) than the sum of its parts.

Final Fantasy VII :: Sephiroth

Backstory: Legendary warrior and role model to thousands (protagonist included).
Goal: To become a god.
Means: Summoning meteor via the black materia to create a wound that would threaten the life of the planet. He would be present at that would, absorbing the lifestream sent to heal.
Result: Cloud defeats Sephiroth, Holy is unleashed but is not enough. The lifestream comes as predicted and saves the planet, with a little help from Aeris.
Personality: Confident, arrogant even (and quite insane). Toys with Cloud as if he were a puppet, displaying almost complete control over him.
Development: All takes place in the backstory, where we learn how Sephiroth went insane after finding out his roots as something of a genetic mutant.
Verdict: A worthy villain who deserves praise since there is far more too him than simply 'looking cool' (although he does). Despite being an easy final battle, Seraph Sephiroth (with OWA) and Cloud unleashing Omnislash for the final form make for one epic climax.

Grade: 9.0

Final Fantasy VIII: Seifer

Backstory: Orphan.
Goal: To become a sorceress' knight.
Means: Achieves this by latching on to Edea and becoming her 'knight in shining armour'
Result: His obsession with this dream leads him to forget who he is and the greater scheme of things in the world.
Personality: Bully type, obsessive (obviously), a natural leader (people are willing to follow him) but he doesn't utilise it and instead acts like an arse
Development: Begins as an arrogant prick who still knows right from wrong but loses this progressively as he chases his dream and struggles to maintain it
Verdict: Wasted potential

Grade: 6.5

Gah, well... uh, as much as I hate to, err... support the, um, Sephiroth fanbase, Ancient_Blood is apparently very much correct about Sephiroth being in control. The FFVII Ultimania stated that Jenova was, in fact, being controlled by Sephiroth's will and determination. And that's canon.

I still don't like him as a villain though.

Sephiroth's backstory is all well and good. It's everything about him AFTER his backstory that makes him a shit villain.
