Weekly Comic Review thread (Spoilers Abound)
So, I figure what better way to start of the Comic dedicated part of this forum then with a thread for people to post their reviews and thoughts on each week's releases of comics, that way, everyone can see what's out, see what's happening, and see what other people think of what's going on in comics that week.
For a quick list of everything that's supposed to ship this week, take a look here, at Diamond's shipping list
Note that Spoiler tags are, in my opinion, at least, not required, do the obvious fact that there will be spoilers here and that, if you're posting your own reviews, chances are you've read everything you're going to that week. I'll go ahead and use them this post out of courtesy, but whatever.
I'll start with my thoughts on this week's comics so far, though I haven't gotten to everything I want to read this week yet (Still need to nab Danger Girl, Midnighter, Welcome To Tranquility, CW: Fallen Son - Wolverine, and Ms. Marvel). Let's start with 52 #48, from the general discussion thread.
Spoiler:
It's the issue everyone who's been following Renee's story has been waiting for. Finally, she has donned the mask and trenchcoat and become -The Question-. Her kicking the crap out of Intergang with Nightwing was top tier, and the whole issue was easily the best in the series so far. I'm really, really worried though that they're killing off Kate Kane, and I will be pissed if they do, because she's a great character. Granted, it would give Renee the motivation to stay The Question, but that's not something I want to be right on. Kate deserves to live, and I'll be really sad if she doesn't.
Nngh. Next week looks like more bullshit with the Scientists, probably leading up to WWIII. Still, I really don't care about their story, get it over with already.
Next up is Detective Comics #831, an issue that marks the return of one of my favorite characters in all of fiction: Harley Quinn, written by the very man who first gave her life in Batman: The Animated Series, Paul Dini.
Spoiler:
The issue opens with a trademark of Harley's: having a conversation of herself in her head, complete with a little version of herself dancing across the page. Come to find out she's at a hearing to see if she can get out of jail early. That, of course, is a no go, however a twist presents itself as she is forcefully broken out by a person masquerading as a cop. What follows is an interesting story involving Scarface and his new puppeteer hiring out a reluctant Harley - who genuinely wants to get out of jail and be, well, mostly normal - to do a job for them.
I won't spoil the ending, cause it was really good and made me, a Harley fan, really happy, but trust me, it's a great read. Probably my favorite issue of a Batman comic since Dini's Poison Ivy story back in September.
On the Marvel side of things, I've also read Avengers: The Initiative, written by Dan Slott.
Spoiler:
Honestly, I didn't know what to expect from this book. I don't know a lot about Dan Slott, and I was a little suspect after it was announced that the title had been changed from a mini into an ongoing. Too my surprise, however, Avengers: The Initiative turned out to be pretty fucking cool. It more or less looks like a Superhero Bootcamp book, focusing on training new, young, freshly registered (sometimes by force) heroes to be on teams and fight super villains as part of The Initiative. It introduces a number of young would be heroes, most if not all of whom I believe are new characters, and shows exactly how The Initiative is works, how new heroes are being trained, and what happens when something goes wrong inside of The Initiative. The ending in particular sets it up for the book to be very intresting, and gives us even more insight into how The Initiative wprls, and just how full of bullshit it can really be. The new characters introduced, particularly Cloud 9 and Trauma, all seem very promising. The writing on the issue is also very good. This is definitely going to be a book to watch, and if the rest of it continues to be as good as this first issue, we could have an extremely good, new, fresh Marvel book on our hands. Shock, right? Book gets bonus points for having totally sweet art too.
For added fun, take a look at the two covers to Avengers: The Initiative, and see how many people you can point out without using the little guide Marvel made.. There's tons of people there that you might not expect. Deceased mutant Wallflower, the entire Nextwave crew, Flatman and Squirrel Girl from the Great Lakes... what ever they are now, Gree Goblin and Bullseye (via the Thunderbolts), a number of folks from heroes For Hire, such as Black Cat and Humbug, Firebird, and even Deadpool's hanging out way in the back!
That's it from me for now. Hopefully by tomorrow I'll have read Danger Girl, Midnighter, Welcome To Tranquility, Civil War: Fallen Son - Wolverine, and Ms. Marvel, so I can post my thoughts on those.
Alrighty, so, Who's next?

There's Dangergirl coming out again? Like... the one with the Abbey Chase and all them?
I could'a sworn that series was dead.

Yeah, the one with Abbey Chase. It's not dead at all. It had it's first run, some one-shots, and a mini (Back in Black) in 2005 (I think that was the year), and now it has a new mini (Body Shots) that just started yesterday. A very good start, might I add.

Back In Black was early last year, actually. Danger Girl releases are sporadic, but the series is far from dead.
Still haven't gotten around to reading everything I wanted to this week yet. Still working on Fallen Son and Midnighter, hopefully soon I'll have both of those.

I'm still waiting to get The Punisher and Bloodrayne: Plague of Dreams, as well as Fallen Son: Wolverine, but I figure I'll just post them up later, since it doesn't look like they'll be... uhhh... available >.> anytime soon. As for the rest of the stuff I got on this (REALLY heavy) week of comics...
52 was fucking awesome. Seriously, I'd been waiting for the moment Renee would become The Question ever since Vic died (RIP, Vic, you were truly one of the best), and honestly I've just been into the Gotham/Intergang story since the beginning. It's definitely the reason I started reading 52 and it's nice to see it coming to a (so far) really great culmination. Plus I rather enjoy Nightwing, Renee, and Batwoman as characters, so it's just fun reading about them. That full-page panel of Montoya in the blue coat and Question mask totally made my day. As you can probably tell pretty easily, I am in love with this issue.
Avengers: The Initiative is off to a really good start. I'm liking the new team, Trauma has a really awesome power, if you ask me. My main complaint was the ending, Armory was easily my favorite of the team so far, and she just gets kicked out of the program in the first fucking issue. I hope this isn't the last we see of her, I really do.
Omega Flight was also a fun read, even if it was just an issue of putting a team together. The writing is solid, and I like Talisman and especially Arachne, though, so I'm really looking forward to this series. Plus it's just interesting seeing a Canadian-based team made of mostly Americans.
Runaways was nice. This is definitely one of the most consistently good books Marvel puts out. I really, really like the plot that this new arc is setting up, with the kids working for Kingpin in order to get a place to stay in New York, it's an interesting angle. Plus it's great to have Chase back on the team, he was always my favorite. Good issue or not, though, it seems like it totally ignored the run in with Iron-Man that ended the last issue, but that's really my only gripe (though it's a big one). It's forgiven, though, because of THE FUCKING PUNISHER <3
Iron-Man: Hypervelocity was a bit lackluster. Still a good issue, and still my favorite currently ongoing mini, but it just wasn't as good as the first three. Still, the characters are awesome (Tony 2.0 is amazing) and Absynthe is still unbelievably hot. It didn't lose the main thing that makes this series great, though, and that's Tony 2.0's narration, which is still top notch. The setup for next issue is nice, though, with Absynthe taking over Tony 2.0's programming and memories. Can't wait to see how that turns out.
Danger Girl: Body Shots is off to an awesome start, it's just as action-packed as the DG series usually are, and I'm liking the plot so far (especially Natalia being back). I was pretty disappointed that Johnny wasn't in this issue at all, though, I really hope he makes it into the series, I've always loved that guy.
Detective Comics was just fucking awesome. That Harley issue I'd been waiting for finally came, and it was ALL Harley. I love that Dini loves her so much, the guy is THE expert on writing one of my favorite ladies, and this was just a really good issue. I kinda hope she stays the way she was here, not quite a hero but not really a villain anymore, I liked that. Plus it had the new Ventriliquist, and I'm really liking her a lot since she made her debut. *still waiting on a Scarecrow issue, though*
Painkiller Jane's new series had a pretty strong start. Just a little ten page preview issue, but I liked it enough. I'm a sucker for guns, action, and cute asses, though - all of which this had in large amounts (or at least as large as a ten page issue would allow).
Miss Marvel is a book I don't actually read, but when I saw Arachne on the cover I got it anyway and quite liked it. There's really not much to say about it other than that the Julia Carpenter fan in me was very happy with the goings-on in this issue and how well it was written. I may have to start following this series if all the issues are even half this good.
Immortal Iron Fist was especially good this week, I thought. After three issues of setting up and getting the plot ready, it seems that shit is finally starting to really go down in this series. This issue did lack one thing, though, the flashback-heavy nature of the first three issues that I enjoyed so much. Still, that's easily forgivable considering that the plot in the present timeline is starting to move a bit faster, and with a second Iron Fist in the mix things are bound to get interesting. This really makes me want to read about some of the Iron Fists of the past - especially the Pirate Queen one, she sounds really interesting, and her flashback in an earlier issue was insanely cool, and her arrow technique sounds really fun. Also, the art for this series just kicks enough ass that I think it should get special mention.
Welcome to Tranquility was good this week. It's nice to see the plot really start moving, even if it is a pretty "wtf" one. Really I can't think of much to say, it was a good issue, we got to finally see Tommy get really serious, which was always nice. However, it had one problem in the glaring lack of Tranquility's true star - Emoticon.

Weekly reviews:
52 #48 - Montoya is going to be a damn fine Question. Love the full-page spread of her after she dons the mask. Hope Kate's okay.
Justice League of America #07 - Love the new HQs. I still don't like Roy's new codename, but this issue did a great job of justifying it. Kendra needed to do more than show up and give Roy an erection.
Avengers: The Initiative #01 - Read on recommendation, but I'll be back for the next one. Lots of potential here.
Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #28 - Great action issue as the Legion and the Wanderers fight the Dominators. Cool to see Triplicate Girl continuing her role as Cos' secret agent, although I didn't like seeing her tortured. I hope her triplicating power is only down temporarily. Looking forward to Supergirl, Mon-El, and Ultra Boy tearing up the Dominators' homeworld next month.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #02 - Still not totally sold on this series. I loved what they did with Amy, and the return of Willow rocked. the first part of the issue was pretty meh, though. Got more than enough of the junior Slayers in season 7. And the art was crap.

Ah, got the rest of this week's haul...
The Punisher wasn't all that great, despite having a shootout and everything. I just found this issue to be really boring, though the actual Widowmaker arc is shaping up to have a cool finale.
Civil War: Fallen Son was nice. Not as good as I was hoping it'd be, but I liked it enough. It had Daredevil in it so I have to respect that, at least. Still, this series is shaping up to be quite nice.
Bloodrayne: Plague of Dreams had a fairly lousy conclusion. It felt pretty rushed and was anti-climatic on multiple occasions which really annoyed me.

Cool, thanks for the info, I had no idea. I'd heard rumors about one-shots and whatnot back when the first series ended (I actually bought the last issue when it first came out), but I thought it never panned out.

Loners. Good start, really. Not even the presence of Mattie Franklin could make me hate this book. Though it's really nothing special, it's not bad at all. I always liked the more street-level heroing and stuff, and this series seems all about that. Bunch of young heroes trying to get used to a life of hiding their powers to avoid the shit that Civil War brought on the Marvel Universe putting on their costumes again to try and stop some MGH peddlers (the same ones that had Mattie in Alias, actually). Pretty decent premise, IMO. Nothing special, but not bad. Something I'll be keeping up with, at least.
52 was pretty damn good, surprisingly. Based on the preview last week of the mad scientists (can't fucking stand that storyline) I was expecting to hate this issue, but Magnus managed to be a badass in it, and Black Adam is getting ready to rape some bitches, so I really couldn't hate. It was nice to see some other superheroes show up in 52, too. I'm not too keen on the JSA, but for some reason I liked that theys howed up. Plus it was fun to watch the scientists just get the shit beat out of them. Quite satisfying, really. Next issue looks like all hell breaks loose, too. Also, lol at the foreshadowing of Infinity Inc wanting to fight Pissed Off Black Adam. I hope Steel's neice gets killed or something. Worthless annoying cunt, she is.
New Avengers was good. Could have been better, but it was good. I don't know how much longer "run from the law and hide" can be interesting. This is one book that really suffered since Civil War, even with the new team of supreme awesome. I did enjoy Iron Man's appearance in Danny's office, though, if only for the line "I hope your wig glue makes you impotent," though. The highlight of this issue was when Dr Strange cast that spell on the Mighty Avengers, definitely. Iron Man seeing himself attacked by a zombie Captain America was great. I hope next issue actually has a fight with Elektra and the Hand, though the way this one ended, it doesn't look like it. Really, post-CW New Avengers is probably the weakest Avengers title right now. Also, the art in this series is really starting to get on my nerves.
Thunderbolts, despite it's total lack of action for the second straight issue (Third? Can't rememer), results in it's usual "Hell yes!" response from me. And in contrast to New Avengers, it's got some of the best art of anything right now. Warren Ellis is one of the best writers in the business (probably my second or third favorite overall) and it really shows here. Thunderbolts, despite being an action comic about a team of supervillains, can really stand on it's banter alone. I really can't wait to see when the shit between Norman and Moonstone goes down, though. Also, the briefing Norman gave the team about Steel Spider was just magic. Ellis is doing everything he can to make Norman the most awesome character ever - hell, he's doing that with almost everyone in the book. Sadly, not even he can make Penance not suck, however. Anyway, yeah, anyone who isn't reading Thunderbolts, Ellis' run starts on issue 110. Go read it. The current arc is on par with the average Daredevil story arc, and Daredevil is my favorite series ever.
Punisher: War Journal was pretty okay. Not the best issue (one of the weaker ones, actually), but still entertaining throughout. A fairly decent chase scene, little bit of cool dialogue, honestly nothing much for the first 3/4 of the issue. Like I said, weak issue. But yeah, the end made up for it. Hatemonger dressing as a Nazi version of Captain America was pretty cool. Especially when Frank saw it in the newspaper. "We gotta steal a car. I'm going to Mexico, and I'm gonna shoot that guy in the face" - it's lines like that one that really explain best why I like this series. The art is finally starting to grow on me, too. It's pretty good art (really good, actually) but I just don't think it fits with The Punisher, but now that I'm getting used to it I can see that it actually DOES work. Oh, yeah, and Frank put on the Captain America mask! Fuck yeah! Captain Punisher is seriously one of the coolest ideas Marvel has had in a while.
Dynamo5 was not as good as the first issue but still pretty entertaining. It's got the potential to become one of my favorite team books, really. I love the dynamic of the Dynamo5 and how they came together (big time superhero died, his widow found out he had five [illigitimate] children, and each of them inherited a different power of his, and she brought them together and made them a team), and they seem to be pretty cool from the fairly limited exposition they get as actual characters. That's probably my only complaint about the series so far - they don't show them as people enough, don't really show them living their normal lives. Just superhero stuff, which I'll admit is pretty cool, but I wouldn't mind seeing any of these heroes in other situations. It's only two issues in, though, and the way this one went, I think that it'll happen.

Cable & Deadpool. Don't mind that sticky white stuff on the floor. That was just me busting a nut over how awesome this issue was. I love how Cable & Deadpool is just essentially just Deadpool's new monthly now. And this issue, man, Alex Hayden, Outlaw, fucking T-RAY, and Bob, Agent of HYDRA were all in it. Want more? Well, T-Ray's whole point for revenge is because after his last appearance, people still liked Deadpool because he was funny. Next issue apparently has the X-Men in it (the team with MYSTIQUE <3) so it seems like it won't lose any momentum, either. Read this issue. Now. You must.
Ultimate Spider-Man was fucking awesome, period. I love Moon Knight and he was a major player in this issue, as well as a new addition of Ronin. I love Ultimate Ronin, his intro and identity are so cool, and it's one of the more interesting origins I've read (even if it's just one issue). Plus it seems to be getting more into the action and less about the high school drama that this arc has had a fair amount of. One of the best issues of the series, honestly. If you like Ultimate Spider-Man, you should really be reading the new arc, it's getting great.
X-Factor was great. A really fun read, from Richtor giving some investigators a description of Spongebob Squarepants and watching as one guy actually followed the lead, to Layla actually doing something worthwhile, and all the dialogue throughout the book was just awesome. I like the whole X-Cell plot, Calisto showing up, and Quicksilver thinking he's Mutant Jesus. Madrox himself is, as always, one of Marvel's best characters - I swear, this guy never loses his stride. He's always awesome. Monet and Siryn bringing in that French mutant was also pretty funny, especially the banter as they flew down to the X-Factor building. Seriously, great issue, one of the best. But you know what? Everything about this issue was fucking awesome, and yet, all of it pales in comparison to one thing. MARROW'S BACK!
Bomb Queen, my love, you never fail to impress me! I think was one of the better issues of any of the Bomb Queen series. Or at least the parts with Bomb Queen herself were, the plot with Blacklight was kinda boring, but sets up for next issue. It was really funny, though, and quite good. Really, though, how can a comic about a supervillain basically tailor-made to my liking, who rules her own city suck? The answer seems to be that it just can't. Also, it had the New Port City Monopoly board, which is totally fucking hilarious.
52 was just Black Adam kicking the ass of the DCU for fifteen pages before he was finally stopped. Great issue. Very, very awesome. There really doesn't need to be much explanation, though in the end, I felt very sorry for Black Adam. Nice to see Booster Gold showing up again, too. I've been wondering what was going on with him this past month, and he had a great scene when he returned to 52. Kinda sad that the series is coming to an end, and my second favorite plotline has just ended (can you guess which one is my favorite? XD), now all that's left is to see some resolution with the Booster story, the Renee/Kate stuff, and, well, a bunch of stuff that I don't really care much about.
World War III was definitely a mixed bag for me. It wasn't nearly as good as I was hoping, or even half as good as I was hoping, but the moments with Black Adam beating the shit out of assorted heroes were awesome. Watching him rip a man's face off was great, but the focus of the book was just J'onn whining about humanity, and honestly that was pretty fucking boring. Still, it had some really classic scenes (Young Frankenstein's bear-hug and Black Adam punching Terra's heart out). Issue 4 was pretty good, at least. Or at least the JSA parts were. The first page was so epic, with all of the JSA getting prepared to fight with the line "The time as come for an ending." But yeah, a lot of the side stuff and J'onn's angsty narration really brought it down several notches. I give it points for one thing, though - the real winner of the mini - and that would be the little fight between Harvey Dent and Killer Croc in the second issue. I fangasmed over that.
Birds of Prey is a series I don't read, never could get into it. But the very instant I heard earlier today that this arc had the Secret Six in it, I got last issue and today's, and I have to say... Mmmmm. Scandal's ass. Also it was a good read, honestly. I love the Secret Six and Ragdoll seems to get even more awesome with each appearance of them (and he was always my favorite member of the team). I thought it was weird that their new sixth member is Harley, considering the last issue of Detective Comics, but I won't complain because simply being on this team makes you 3x more awesome than you used to be, at least. Plus she's being written by Simone now. Also some stuff happened with Barda and Ice and Huntress, but whatever. Secret Six <3
The Mighty Avengers was... Well, it wasn't all that great, honestly. Aside from Ares being a badass. It was a few flashbacks to some of the people that got recruited for the team, then some futile attacks on Ultron, and then the Avengers figured out that it was Ultron they were fighting. Not much, really. Of course, we still have no idea why Tony just... turned into her randomly. At the very least, though, at least they told us why Ultron is a woman now. But yeah, underwhelming issue. Not bad, no, but underwhelming. Luckily, we have Frank Cho drawing a hot naked girl Ultron to distract from the lack of anything of major importance happening.

Cable & Deadpool #39 - Can Bob, Agent of HYDRA get his own miniseries please? This book really is more fun without Cable standing around being all serious and manipulative. Given Cable's involvement with the X-Men and rumors that he's going to be getting a solo book again, I hope we can see Deadpool take over this title completely. It's just so very much more fun like this.
X-Factor #18 - As usual, this is the gold standard for current comics. Exciting, funny, and all around a blast to read. Layla's little machinations lead up to a great conflict with one of the X-Men's oldest enemies, a former X-Factor villain from the 90s, and one of my favorite underrated X-Men. While I'm nervous to see Marrow apparently gone bad again, it is at least nice to see her. I just hope they don't make her all out evil. I liked Marrow best when she was a troubled good guy with beauty issues.
X-Men #198 - Took forever for this to get scanned, but it was worth it. Carey's run continues to be excellent as we see a giant alien menace tear up Cable's Providence. It always strikes me as really strange the range of powers on this team. On the one hand you have people like Cannonball, Iceman, and Cable, who are among the strongest of the remaining mutants. On the other we have Lady Mastermind, Mystique, and Sabretooth, who all have their particular niches, but aren't as all-arond effective.
Mighty Avengers #2 - Like New Avengers last week, I read this one out of boredom and because I liked the Initiative. I wasn't horribly impressed. It was mostly just an issue of the Avengers standing around and looking at Ultron, while flashing back to how they were assembled. And Naked Janet Ultron is just plain weird. I'd bet money it was only designed this way so Frank Cho could draw a naked woman on every page.
52 #50 - Awesome issue. World War III, the reader's digest version. Tons of action crammed onto every page. We got to see Booster again, finally, and Black Adam's ultimate fate is really nice. Thankfully this isn't the end of Black Adam, but it's a great end to his part in 52. I'm looking forward to the last two issues.
World War III 1-4 - I'm not going to review these separately, as they all kind of bleed together in my memory. Overall, I felt these books were really lackluster. Black Adam hit things - which is always cool - and killed a couple of minor Teen Titans (including Terra 2, which is blatantly done just to open the playing field for the new Terra), we saw all of the OYL gap-fills that got pushed out of 52 crammed into a few pages, and J'onn floated around and acted really emo. Yawn. 52 covered the war much better than these issues.
Birds of Prey #105 - Continuing with the theme of disappointment, we have Birds of Prey. The Secret Six stuff was good, the fight between Kendra and Scandal was good, really everything was as good as you expect from BoP. But after last issue's big reveal of Ice, I was expecting some kind of follow-up. Instead Tora was only on four pages, and all she did was sit on a coach and say "Hmm?" once. This was my most anticipated book of the week, but in the end I was really, really let down.
Flash #11 - This book is continuing to improve with the new writer, and it looks great now that Tony Daniel has moved over here (although I'd still have preferred him to remain on Teen Titans). Inertia is gathering together a bunch of the Rogues to team-up against the Flash, and Barry Allen's widow comes back from the future to warn Bart that he's going to get his ass kicked. Solid issue, but nothing really amazing.
Nightwing Annual #2 - And speaking of OYL gap-fills, this is the story of why Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon didn't get married (aside from the fact that Dick really should be with Kory). It has a lot of flashbacks to their time together as Robin and Batgirl, while the present action shows Dick's recovery from the injuries he sustained in Infinite Crisis #7. It's actually a really good read, and the art is great.
Legion of Super-Heroes in the 31st Century - The comic book version of the LoSH cartoon series. I read this mostly out of curiosity. Not bad, not especially good; it was mostly an introduction to the characters. If nothing else, it gave out the Legionnaires' real names, which is something the cartoon has largely avoided. Apart from some cool Triplicate Girl moments, there's really nothing here to recommend.
Justice League of America #8 - Hands down, the best comic I read this week. This is mostly the set-up to the JLA/JSA team-up, and it's a blast. We see Wildcat and Mr.Terrific showing up to give the Leaguers some pointers, while Batman and Black Lightning unmask one of the enemies from the first story arc as a brainwashed Karate Kid from the pre-Zero Hour LoSH. The JSA brings in Starman, and it's revealed that he and Val are two out of seven Legionnaires lost in the present. The JLA and JSA decide to work together and proceed to follow the classic tradition of splitting into small groups to search for the multiple Legionnaires. It's all very class JLA/JSA team-up material, the kind that we saw every summer back in the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. Having read all of those, I'm highly entertained by this return to form. I think this is going to be a fantastic storyline and a whole hell of a lot of fun.
