Visiting Wutai without Yuffie
Does anyone know for sure if the weapons shop in Wutai will sell to you if you have not yet gotten Yuffie in your party?
I know that they don't sell to you during the 'Yuffie steals your materia' sidequest, but I am wondering if the shop is available *before* that side quest begins.

If memory serves, the shop is not available until after the materia is returned at the end of the Yuffie sidequest, even if she hasn't stolen your materia yet.

What happens if you didn't get Yuffie at all? Do you still get the important things in Wutai (like the Leviathan summon materia?)

As far as I was aware, you miss out on it, because the whole pagoda quest naturally requires Yuffie to complete.
So yeah, Wutai is effectively rendered irrelevant without Yuffie in your party.

After some investigation, the following things are available in Wutai when you visit it before getting Yuffie:
The Weapon and Item shops are open.
You can take the Items from Godo's house (Magic Shuirken and Hairpin, I believe).
You can visit the Da-Chao Statues (and the 'crispy critters' area).
You can't undertake the Pagoda quest, or open the chest in the item shop (which Yuffie is supposed to steal from you immediately after you take it), or get the HP Absorb or MP Absorb materia. Also, you can't do the Turtle's Paradise quest, since one of the fliers is only accessible during the 'Yuffie steals your materia' quest.

I never did like the Wutai sidequest for some reason; I think it was the fact that you had to lose our materia temporarily. If I did the sidequest at all I wouldn't start it until after I got the highwind so I could fly though it.

Why do you ask, Monetary Dragon? I'm compelled to guess you're doing a playthrough under extreme handicap (no EXP, no materia, no bonus characters, etc.) and you're trying to be sure you can buy the damage-inflicting spell items there before you enter the Coral/Northern Crater arc?

Okay, in a few sentences:
I am undertaking some challenges which involve killing Emerald and Ruby Weapon with Disc 1 parties (by making a Disc 1 party, hacking a Disc 3 party to be identical to it, then fighting the Weapons with that Disc 3 party). This is without allowing use of Chocobuckle, Cait Sith's instant win limit, or All 7 Fever. So far I have killed Ruby Weapon with a L35 Disc 1 party in this manner, and my calculations indicate that I can do the same with a L21 Disc 1 party (IF I can get into Gongaga without fighting the Turks- see other thread).
I will explain how it all works when I have it done.
Wutai is needed for Yuffie's Magic Shuirken weapon (3 materia slots, +10Dex), for the 5 materia slot Murasame for Cloud, and possibly for Choco Bracelets (+10Dex accessory). Gongaga is needed to be able to steal Spider Webs.

The way you play this game blows my mind. It's a completely different game to you. I got your no-controller fight with Ruby Weapon, but this is insane.

Wait, fighting and WINNING against Ruby Weapon without pushing a single button? Does it count on getting 7777?

I've been in graduate school. I really should be working on my thesis proposal now, rather than playing or thinking about FF7. Some other things have distracted me from FF7, but graduate school is the biggie.
Der Squirrel- I have completed no controller battles for both Emerald and Ruby Weapon, both allowing and not allowing use of Knights of the Round, on Disc 3. I know for certain that I've killed Emerald Weapon without a controller on Disc 2, but I don't recall off the top of my head if I've killed Ruby w/o controller on Disc 2. My Disc 2 Emerald kill (and the Ruby kill, if I did it) involves Knights of the Round. None of the no-controller battles involve All 7 Fever.
When I get my current set of challenges done I will finally update my 'Extreme Weapon Guide' to include all of the Weapon challenges I have completed. There are too many for me to remember all at once, and I should really have them all recorded in one place.

It turns out I have killed Ruby w/o controller on Disc 2. I can't seem to find any other old threads describing my other kills (extreme low level, etc). The best line from that thread is "Once I had enough Sneak Attacks to start experimenting, I seemed to accidentally kill him with just Sneak Attacks."
EDIT:
Here's me killing Ruby with a L32 Red13, and Emerald with a party at L27, 27, 28.

I did a min level playthough (only one character alive at end of each required battle, rotating characters to evenly distribute EXP), then killed the Weapons with it. Red13 was on L32 for Ruby as he was the one who got the EXP from killing Ultimate Weapon, which you need to do to get Ruby to appear. Note that those kills do not involve Knights of the Round.
