I never had much problems levelling as a hunter, though that was a while ago so if any major updates had come and gone since then, I can see the difference.
But basically, send in the pet first and when it starts hitting and doing his thing is when you start up, preferably with a slower shot like a sting to give the pet a slight lead.
After that, just go full bore. You'll pull off the pet in a couple seconds but by that time the mob should be about dead at which point you either hit him with a snare to give yourself time to finish it off or you feign death to reset it all.

What's your spec? Survival, from what I've noticed, tends to pull in aggro a lot more quickly than something like Marksmanship.

Talent points have gone mostly into Beast Mastery, but I spent just enough on Marksmanship to get as far as Aimed Shot. Anything in the BM tab that even so much as hints as increasing my pet's DPS has been clicked. There's not a great deal to spend on the pet's talents, but I've done a similar thing with them.
My character's stats look something like this. In fact, they look exactly like that.

You'll find that generally speaking, you'll gain a much larger benefit by sticking to one talent tree as opposed to spreading out your points at early levels.
The benefits from gaining access to the tree defining talents as early as possible tends to help more than spreading out the points because something like dipping into another tree to gain an extra 10% attack power won't help much as you level when you're running around with about 200 attack power total. On the other hand you could use those points in one tree and gain access to the more powerful abilities as early on as possible.
Sticking to BM, I'd probably do something more along the lines of this: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#cxbhzTxR
Also, don't forget to pick up a glyph or two as the major slots open up. They can be extremely helpful early on.

To answer a previous question, I tend to play on GuruBRashi
Overflowing with BRs (Brazilians). God I wish I knew that before I got entrenched with 3 80s on that server.
And wow, how is your gearscore so high? =o

I'm on Duskwood, with an 80 Druid and a low Rogue I hardly ever work on.

I'm on The Sha'tar, with my main, and my alt DK, because hittig things is always fun. Working on a Pala, as they level easier.

I was, as of two weeks ago, on Steamwheedle, but I'm currently not playing anymore (and probably won't be going back, as the longer I stay away, the less I feel like re-upping).
I have been playing this game too long. :-/

I stopped playing due to money issues, but when I did, I was on Gul'dan. I was surprised when someone told me it was an older realm because it is pretty empty compared to the two other realms I played on(Undermine and Azgalor).
Once a job opportunity pops up, I'll end up re-activating my account.

Let me know when you get back on. I'm on Azgalor and I really, really, really need people to play with.
