Actually, Square said that they will reveal an established character from the series.
So Cid. (dunno if he's a party member though)

Sazh has a baby chocobo who apparently nests in his afro. Don't think there have been any news about moogles so far.

Oh right, the baby chocobo.
Kinda inconsequential so far.

Nilfalasielre: re FFVIII/XIII comparisons

I was mainly referring to the characters' appearances, not so much their personalities or backstories. I took a look at the toys of the action figures, and if I squinted just right, at least half of them I could mistake for FFVIII characters. And then I remembered that Jill is Evil Quistis/Celes and threw that in there as well. That's all.

^ Ahhh, ok. Yeah, appearance-wise, I can see where you're coming from Except for Sazh = Irvine. That one's just mind-boggling to me, lol.

This isn't a bad thing for me, since I liked the FFVIII cast well enough, but I can see that not being a good thing for some people.
I actually get that a lot too. The general style of clothing is very similar.

I hope there's something awesome like "Spoony bard!" or "Son of a submariner!"

I'm more excited about this game than when FF12's release was announced and stuff ^_^

It seems the Sphere Grid is back

More here.

Based on the latter link's description, Optima roles are basically the new jobs, not just in function (a la FFXII) but also in progression, since you can level up a role and gain access to more powerful abilities.

Am I just getting older, or does this game's story look like something that Twilight's author would find hokey and over-the-top?

I don't understand it. The writers for this had it all...a great battle system, super-impressive graphics, a big budget, and a franchise that is guaranteed to sell. Why why why am I seeing a preview that starts with kissing and tears and proceeds to meander through a dozen cliche melodramas (such melodramas include but are not limited to: "we have to persevere...together!", "how do I continue after all my past mistakes?", and "I'm the only family so-and-so had after ma and pa passed away")? Well, maybe that's not the meat of the game, right? Maybe it's this other lower-class-heart-of-gold-vs-upper-class-rich-snobs plot that I've seen a hundred RPGs pull off with more sincerity and depth than I saw anywhere in this demo. I really thought Square learned something after making FFX-2. I'm literally embarrassed at my faith in Square-Enix now that I'm finding this not to be the case...if it weren't for that awesome afro dude, I'd probably pull my chips off the table for this game now. Here's hoping afro dude and the amazing summons can keep what I've seen of the game's story afloat.

Sphere grid eh? I'm okay with that! Amusement park? Sounds like a next-gen Gold Saucer! Cliched japanese melodrama? Count me in!

Hmm... so the Paradigms (or whatever) are kinda like a job system then?
Awesome.
And thank god for the amusement park, I loved the Gold Saucer. (I hope it has an equally annoying theme too)

<Reasonable grounds for opinion>
Although I share your general skepticism towards the games story, and have maintained from day one that it appeared to be half about as much depth as a potato, there is a good explanation for you concerns:
As a rule, trailers are sensationalist crap.
