I can't even control the volume on it now, nothing windows related is properly running. I can turn it on and run CBR and that's it.

Ok so my parents just bought my 10 year old sister a new laptop, and they gave me hers.

HP Pavilion zv5000
69GB HD (not a big deal to me, getting an external with a TB for christmas)
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz
383MB RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon 9000/9100 IGP
And it works!!

No idea what any of that means by the way. Anyone have any suggestions on how to improve upon my machine without breaking the bank?

Solution presents itself. Nice!

Get way more RAM to start off, that should help immensely. Other than the somewhat small HD, it sounds decent to me.

I'm not that computer savvy, so I'm not even sure where to look for ram or how I'd go about installing it. Another thing, is ram the same thing as memory?

Yes, it's the same as memory. If you're not computer savvy, it's probably best to leave the installation to a pro. Just don't go to Best Buy or some crappy place like that.

Of course an older machine running a P4 processor might have motherboard that isnt rated to go very high with ram. Maybe 1 gig to 1.5 at the most. Also, with a machine that old odds are you a looking back before a lot of the current memory being sold and its going to be hard to find it at a retailer. You may have to look at used memory to fill the gap.

Being that its a laptop, odds are that your only real room for improvement will be RAM.
